Love, anyway.

So I've always been extremely fond of this quote...and I thought of it today because of a wonderful post on thoughtcatalogue that really has many of the same messages.

It reminds us that light and hope and love are not something we find, but something we are and something we emit.  There will be plenty of reasons why we think we should withhold these things from others or the world at large when we are feeling hurt or betrayed or depressed or heartbroken...but this quote reminds us that the power to make it better is not something to be found, but something within us...LOVE ANYWAYS.  It's the only thing that can make it better.

America, The Beautiful.

I LOVE the way this anchor sums up the reasons that the Coke ad is as American as they come.

"America, the beautiful by any other language, is still America...the Beautiful!"
*Cue slow clap*
*Cue "USA" chant*

Right on.

"You can be the same, or you can be the change!"

In my searches I came across this song by Trevor Hall and the Luminaires.  They had some good stuff to say.  Get inspired!  Enjoy!

Wowza! Invigorating!

If you want to feel better about the world, google "Be The Change."  You don't need to look for anything in particular...just notice how many sites pop up.  Pretty awesome, huh?  THAT MANY PEOPLE are interested in making the world a better place...or making a change...Awesome.

Ex Post Facto...

You're already here, so you probably already know, but in case you don't...here it is in real-time.

Some great tips for the most common life-goals!

So there is a new list out: 100 tips to meeting your goals...but it seemed overwhelming so I wanted you to know it isn't...because you aren't looking for all of them.  You're looking for the tips that help you to tackle your biggest goals...

Here's the article...but before you go:  what is your goal?  There are some major headlines like "better financial stability," "eating healthier," "quitting smoking"  etc.  So know that you're going to check out the headlines first to find where your major tips are located in the post.  Then, take the time to read the tips for THAT goal.  Otherwise, it's overwhelming and you'll be bored quickly and not get much out of it.

I particularly like some of the tips in the "finances" portion such as "unsubscribe" as I definitely get tempting "money-savers" for things that I wouldn't even have considered if I didn't receive that email...so it's doing it's job well, but probably costing you more money than you would have spent without it - narrow these emails down to help you out with those financial temptations (I just did)!  Ok...now you know what you're getting into; take a look and see if these tips can help you get on your road to success!

Your words become your actions...

I learned about mantras in religion class during high school...somewhere between lion-poses in yoga and "feelings journals" all of which, at the time, seemed like a really easy "A" and generally useless.  I would like to wholeheartedly admit that my high school self was SO wrong about that (and many other things I'm sure).

One...the yoga thing.
It makes you breathe.  It asks you to think about breathing, about stretching, and about pushing yourself.  It doesn't ask you what you want to be in 5 minutes, or where you want to be in 20 years.  It asks you to be YOU RIGHT NOW, and to leave the rest for later.  It's a great exercise (literally and figuratively) in focus and control.  It was, perhaps, the only time I was ever kicked out of class, for laughing at what I now know as cat pose...and I'm happy to say, I was wrong about yoga.

Feelings journals.
I have mine...somewhere in my boxes of hoarded life-treasures is a binder full of all of the life-planning and "who am I" and "what do I want" exercises in that class.  I want to read it again when I find it.  Even though I'm absolutely sure that I did not know what I wanted, I wrote about it.  I wrote about what I knew and what I thought was good and I brainstormed and worked through the question(s) that my 17-18 year old self couldn't actually answer.  This teaches us to open our minds and free up our thoughts to be expressed in whatever way possible.

I remember "streams of consciousness."  I still write them today when I need an escape.  It's where you literally sit with a pen and paper (or computer if you so desire) and you just write/type whatever comes to your mind.  It can be words, phrases, lyrics...ANYTHING that comes to your brain.  It will be completely random and make zero sense on any sort of literary level.  It's a science experiment, a social experiment, and a psychological experiment in one.  It is freedom of thought and from judgement.  Sometimes when I read mine, I remember exactly what I was feeling and why I wrote certain things, and other times I think...WHAT?!  Where did THAT thought come from?  It's brilliant.  It's fun to re-read and it's perfectly fine to use it simply to clear your system of all the thoughts/worries/opinions that are stuck in there and stressing you out.

Finally, Mantras.
We sat in our tiny classroom, on the floor (during this particular part of the school-year because it was somehow more liberating (I totally agree, by the way and would absolutely love to sit on a floor without shoes all day to work--Google knows what's up)).  We listened to meditation CDs.  Sometimes it was spoken, sometimes it was music.  Most of the time I just didn't get it.  Some of my classmates slept...we're talking literally snoring (and I got kicked out for laughing in yoga - at least I was conscious)!  Then, we discussed empowerment through thought.  Here's one of those things I just wasn't sure about then...and I am CONVINCED of now.  You need something that you believe in.  You need something that makes you feel centered and calms your mind.  You need something that refocuses your breathing and your thoughts and allows you to function when you feel like you are spiraling.  Mantras.  Short phrases that may or may not be a complete sentence.  Inspiration for YOU.  It doesn't really matter if they make sense to anyone else.

Anna Nalick's song "Just Breathe" comes to mind here, mostly because I know that is actually a fairly common mantra.  Sometimes that one works for me when I really need to cool it but it doesn't quite refocus my energy, it just helps me to regain control of it (thank you, yoga).  I really like "You are exactly where you need to be right this moment.  What you are feeling or thinking has purpose.  You can use it to get to where you are going."  Or some iteration of this.  It may help you, it may not.  You're welcome to make your own version or to create something completely different that works for you.

I challenge you to find your mantra.  Write a "feelings journal" or stream of consciousness when you need to relieve that brain pressure.  Sit down and stretch for 5 minutes, or 20 minutes, or an hour if you can and just breathe and focus on stretching further.

If you want some more info on mantras, see a recent article I read, here.  If you want to share YOUR mantra, comment below.  You never know who you could be helping by sharing!

In case you missed the words of wisdom this week on the blog or via twitter, the blog title was inspired by thinking of mantras in this way.  Your thoughts are a chain reaction for everything you become.  Make them positive:

Sorry, it's for your own good :)

...they will stop the sale of tobacco products in their business by October 2014!

This may befuddle some, anger others, and not affect the rest, but the reason this is such awesome news is that it really is to take a stand for the health of their customers...that's right: if you didn't know, smoking kills over 1,200 people daily.  As in...a product is made that kills its customers.  Can you imagine buying food at the grocery store that increased your chance of dying young exponentially (there are some, but we'll talk about that in other posts like this one to help you get and stay healthy)?

So, here's to you, CVS!  Thanks for taking care of the people you serve...like a mother who makes her children get shots, it's what's good for us, whether we like it or not!

Hopefully this number decreases rapidly!

Special Efforts Pay Off!

I know, the topics today seem to treat the sad and/or depressing HOWEVER, it is with hope and excitement as we realize that not all bad things end in complete tragedies!

Like the wonderful outcome of one man who dared to listen to a stranger (saving him from his intended suicide), and the large-scale efforts of police and special agents and the public (go-go-gadget public awareness) that were able to apprehend multiple pimps during the Super Bowl festivities.  The best part isn't even necessarily the capture of some, but the freeing of others.  At least 16 minors are said to have been freed from human trafficking circles this weekend!  What excellent news!  There may be miles to go before we sleep, but every person makes a difference.

You can be the change by being aware of your surroundings and reporting any suspicious activity.

You might be saving lives every day.

A smile, a hug, a wave, a friendly "hello."  These things that are so easy to give away sometimes can seem hard to come by when we are down and out.  I wanted to send out a reminder that these things save lives.  Let yourself open up to others and recognize them and acknowledge them.  If you have the time, talk to them.  Why not?  On the train for an hour?  What better things do you have to do?  You might just save a life.

Someone might be thankful to you, the total stranger, who made the life-changing difference.

YOU CAN BE THE CHANGE IN A THOUSAND LITTLE WAYS!

**If you or someone you know might be suffering from extreme depression or suicidal thoughts, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.  You're not weak for needing a third party to talk to, and neither are they.  If they are in serious danger, they'll be thankful to you later.  Don't wait.**

Perspective: homophobia

The interesting perspective here is that of a homosexual male whose basic argument is that homophobia is not to be condemned, per-say, but to be understood in the context of the society that has encouraged it.  Wrap your head around this one!  An interesting read.

"Take Care" of your relationships

Saw this blog post in Spanish and wanted to share it.  **You can be translate this and all of my posts using google (not guaranteeing any sort of accuracy on that) via the link at the top right of my blog page "translate this blog."**  This post reminds me of the way we should treat others and expect to be treated in good relationships.  Set your standards high and receive the good that you deserve. and don't forget, it's a two-way street... so we must include, and vice versa.

Here goes my translation:

Take care of her and have a thousand details that make you fall in love time and again.  There are many wishing to be in your place and she gave you an opportunity, she opened the doors of her life and her heart to you and you have to demonstrate to her every day that you are worth it.  Every day.  Despite how complex and distorted we women are, in spite of the fact that many times we don't even understand ourselves.  Patience.  In the background, we conform with the simplest things.  Take care of her so that she feels safe, protected, and so she knows that with you nothing bad can happen.  Make her feel precious, valued and loved, discover why she's special, and understand that you will never find someone equal to her.  For that, take her hand and don't let go of it, don't let the magic, the spark, or the desire to kiss her all day long burn out.

Take care of her because you are her man, her refuge, and your only mission is to make her happy.  Let it never occur to you to steal a tear from her because she chose you to take a thousand smiles.  Give her reasons to trust and be yourself, she has already met many ghosts.  Have something to offer, to contribute, and be open to change for her if something is missing, because you are trying to complement one another and to better yourselves together.  Take care of her and know her in her original form, know her manias, her weaknesses, her whims, her favorite song, her form of thinking, of feeling, and of laughing.  Take care of her because, it's simply the only thing she asks of you.

And vice versa.

Want to see the world? Get going!

Have you ever thought you'd like to win the lottery and travel the world?  I have.

Have you ever gotten jealous of friends and family and complete strangers on tv shows that were traveling the world?  I have.

Have you ever just said...I'm gonna' go...and traveled the world?  I have.
It's worth every penny, every hour of research to make it possible, taking jobs that pay $3/hour just to pay your debts.  They say it's the only thing you can buy that makes you richer.  I haven't found anything to the contrary (yet).  So I'll encourage you to move. stretch. travel.

Get out and see it all
(a lifetime isn't enough...so you might as well get to what you can while you're still around to do it)!

This video was sent to me by my amazing sister, who is brilliant and supportive and awesome!  I checked it out and, of course, it reminded me it's time to get on the move again!

Thanks to STA Travel Australia for the sweet video!  STA sponsors student travel on an internship around the globe each year (you can see my application video from a few years back or search "STA Travel Internship" on youtube and you'll be sure to find some other inspiring young people with open minds and creativity).  STA Travel also has generally cheap tickets on their website: statravel.com.

We're (slowly) getting it right...

My friend, Lyndsey is a wonderful writer.  I met her playing indoor soccer a few years ago.  I loved that team.  They made me laugh on and off the field: a group of girls that wanted to win, but really wanted to have fun!  Lyndsey has written a range of things.  She has at least one published book out that I know of and I imagine that she'll have many more if she doesn't already.

From all that I can gather, Lyndsey is kind and caring and funny, a loving wife and mother.  I think she deserves to be treated like any wife and mother (and daughter) want to be.  Based on the most recent of her articles that I read, it looks like the world is finally starting to get that part right.  Thanks for letting us know that, although sometimes slow, change is possible!

Be the change you wish to see in the world (and then let us know that it's working)!
